Charles Meyers’s “touch me surfaces” leads us into the complexity of his
paintings. His oils are built up layers of shiny and mat glazes. These add to
the illusion of space. His solution for creating three dimension is quite
different than most painters. Usually the viewer looks “in” from the surface
of the canvas. Mr.Meyers, whose paintings are on wood builds “out”. Some
of the painted boxes are as deep as six inches. The viewer not only looks
into the window of dimension but moves around from side to painted side for a
more complete sense of space and distance.
The first step to Meyers’s art is a written theme. It might be a long poem or
a “Fortune Cookie Line”.The imaginary imagery moves from amorphic to
figurative. The air floats further with dots of painted color which adds to the
“in-out” inventive magic of the paintings of Charles Meyers.
